Everything you need to know before installing a solar greenhouse
Solar greenhouse or bioclimatic greenhouse: What it is
The solar greenhouse is a passive environmental control system that aims to improve energy performance and living comfort. This innovative structure offers several benefits, including energy savings, the creation of new living spaces, and a pleasant environment for relaxation and enjoyment in all seasons.
But, what makes a solar greenhouse so special? And what permits are required to build one? Let's find out together!
Features
It is basically a metal structure made of steel or aluminum that sits against the wall of a house. The cladding is made of tempered glass and can provide protection from UVA rays while still maintaining the pleasantness of sunlight.
Requirements
The crucial element in qualifying an artifact as a solar greenhouse is the ability to capture solar thermal radiation during winter to naturally heat the building and thus reduce heating costs. At the same time, by means of movable solar shading placed over the glazing, it protects against excess summer heat, allowing savings on cooling systems. Indeed:
- Must provide energy savings in winter air conditioning, not less than 5%.
- It must be equipped with appropriate solar shading systems of glazed surfaces in order to control and avoid overheating in summer.
- It shall not require additional systems for its heating or cooling.
- It must not compromise the sanitary requirements of neighboring rooms by providing the necessary air changes through appropriate opening parts.
- The overall depth of the greenhouse, shall not exceed 2 meters.
Regulations and permits required to build a solar greenhouse
The construction of a solar greenhouse is regulated by a number of regulations that vary at the regional and municipal levels.
In general, the construction of a solar greenhouse requires a Certified Declaration of Commencement of Activity (SCIA), which must be submitted to the municipality. The SCIA must include a number of documents, including a technical report demonstrating that the greenhouse meets the energy requirements established by current regulations.
In addition, in some regions, such as Marche, the solar greenhouse must meet a number of specific requirements (beyond those already specified in the previous paragraph):
- The glazed area must be at least 50% of the vertical area of the greenhouse, at least 50% of which is openable and at least one total openable area equal to 1/8 of the area of the solar greenhouse.
- For residential buildings, the total area of the greenhouse shall not exceed 20 percent of the usable living area of the relevant building unit.
Advantages and uses of a solar greenhouse:
A solar greenhouse offers a number of advantages over other roofing solutions. First of all, it saves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions, thus helping to mitigate climate change.
In addition, it can be used to create new livable spaces within a home. These spaces can be used for a variety of purposes, such as a relaxation area, a dining room, or a conservatory from which to admire the starry sky.
An alternative use is the cultivation of plants that would not normally survive in a given climate. This may include tropical or subtropical plants that require warmer temperatures during the winter.
Final considerations
With the right planning and design, a solar greenhouse can be a valuable addition to your home.
If you're considering building a solar greenhouse, it's important to rely on companies experienced in the field who can give you the best advice and ensure service and support even in the years after installation.
